No. 13 Virginia Clinches Weekend Series Over Pitt with 8-1 Rout

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Macee Eaton produced three RBI and Taylor Smith recorded a career-high seven strikeouts as No. 13 Virginia defeated Pitt 8-1 on Saturday, securing the weekend series. The result lifts Virginia's record to 30-3 overall and 8-2 in ACC competition. Eaton's consistent production and Smith's command highlighted a performance marked by discipline and execution under pressure.

Offense Ignites with Walks and Timely Contact

Virginia opened a 3-0 lead in the first inning despite collecting just one hit. Back-to-back walks set the table, followed by Eaton's single up the middle that plated the first run. Three consecutive walks and a wild pitch brought home two more before the frame ended.

Pitt answered with a solo home run by KK Esparza in the fourth to cut the margin to 3-1.

The fifth inning brought three additional runs: Eaton's RBI triple, Kelsey Hackett's double to score her, and Reagan Hickey's sacrifice fly. Virginia tacked on two in the sixth via Jade Hylton's RBI double and another groundout from Eaton, extending the lead to 8-1.

Pitching Locks Down the Opposition

Taylor Smith earned the win in her start, permitting one run on a single hit, one walk, and seven strikeouts over four innings. Courtney Layne closed out the final three innings for her fourth save, scattering two hits while fanning four.

Pitt's Bekah Duck suffered the loss after 4.1 innings, yielding six runs on three hits alongside seven walks and three strikeouts.

Standout Efforts Build on Season Trends

Eaton's three RBI marked her second consecutive multi-production outing, pushing her season total to 51 — tied for fifth in program history. This extends her run of 17 multiple-RBI efforts, one short of the 18 she set last year. Freshman Smith eclipsed her prior best with seven strikeouts.

Joanna Hardin observed: “There’s a lot of intent right now, lots of focus through fatigue and schedule changes. Clarity at the plate has been huge. Our plate discipline has been on point and being ready to hit. We’re getting the timely hit when we have runners on. When we give run support to our pitching staff, they keep us in games all the time. We’ve been aware and alert and making great decisions on the defensive side of the ball. It’s going to be important to come out and finish strong tomorrow. That’s the next step and leveling up for us. Can we come out and finish the way we’re capable of playing.”

Series Finale Awaits Sunday

Virginia and Pitt conclude the set Sunday at noon at Palmer Park, with free admission for spectators. A strong finish would affirm the clarity and resolve Hardin described amid a demanding schedule.
